Finding your people: how shared experience changes the dating dynamic
When someone already understands what you're living with, the energy you once spent explaining becomes energy for connecting.
There is a particular fatigue that comes from always being the teacher.
Explaining terminology.
Explaining why plans changed.
Explaining why a "simple" activity isn't simple.
Explaining that needing accommodation is not lack of effort.
Meeting someone with relevant lived experience may remove some of that burden.
Recognition can accelerate comfort
You may hear:
"I get it."
And, for once, believe they probably do.
But compatibility still matters
Shared illness does not guarantee:
- chemistry;
- kindness;
- emotional maturity;
- aligned values;
- communication;
- healthy boundaries.
A diagnosis is not a compatibility score.
Look for shared understanding plus individual fit
The strongest connection may be:
"You understand this part of my life—and you're also someone I genuinely enjoy."
That's the point.
Not pairing diagnoses.
Connecting people.
